This article is a re-elaboration of a part of my Master's thesis, dedicated to the analysis and translation of the collection of short stories Contos de cães e maus lobos written by the Portuguese writer Valter Hugo Mãe. Specifically, it provides an analysis and translation of the short story O menino de água as an exemplification of the author's recurring themes and contemporary tendencies of the short narrative form.
