This essay explores the interrelation between love, the divine, and the feminine in Spanish Romantic literature, focusing on three major authors: José Zorrilla, Gustavo Adolfo Bécquer, and José de Espronceda. Through a comparative reading and by drawing upon classical and theological paradigms, such as Plato’s Symposium and Christian agápē, this study investigates how Romanticism reshapes the metaphysical power of love and its implications on gender dynamics.

This article examines the Romantic rewriting of the figure of Satan in El Diablo Mundo by José de Espronceda within the broader framework of new Romantic mythology. Focusing on Lucifer’s monologue in the poem’s Introducción, it explores the humanization of the Devil, his tragic dimension, and his symbolic role as an embodiment of the Romantic hero, shaped by suffering, metaphysical doubt, and a titanic drive toward knowledge. This paper further engages in a comparative dialogue with major French reinterpretations dating back to the nine-teenth century, particularly those by Alfred de Vigny and Victor Hugo. Finally, special attention is given to the Espronceda’s poem El Verdugo, where the executioner emerges as the symbolic projection of satanic crime.

Monstrous, Angelic, Abject: Clare Kendry and the Collapse of Boundaries in Passing

di Sophie Rossi

This article analyses the character of Clare Kendry in Nella Larsen’s Passing (1929) through the lens of Julia Kristeva’s abjection theory and the image of the Gothic femme fatale. By embodying contradictory archetypes – from the Angel in the House to the Tragic Mulatta – Clare ends by destabilizing rigid boundaries of race and gender. The analysis also aims to show how Clare’s fluid identity exposes the fragility of Irene Redfield’s constructed selfhood, revealing how precarious the nature of identity can be in a segregated society.

This article aims to clarify the experience of exile from the perspective of one of the most prominent philosophers of the twentieth century, namely Maria Zambrano, was forced to leave Spain following the de-feat of the Republican faction at the end of the Civil War, in 1939. When the country fell into the hands of the dictator Francisco Franco, exile appeared to be the only solution for those who decided not to submit to the new regime.

This article is based on an excerpt from my thesis, which focuses on Graphematics terminology. Its central reference is Dimitrios Meletis’s The Grapheme as a universal basic unit of writing, where the author aims to define the grapheme across writing systems. Since the grapheme could be misinterpreted as functionally equivalent to the phoneme, I here propose the notion of «graphematic space», which better describes the relation between sign and meaning.

This essay, based on an excerpt from my BA thesis in Digital Humanities discussed at the University of Pisa, aims to reconstruct the history of the Tenuta Granducale delle Pianore (PI) through an interdisciplinary approach that integrates documentary and cartographic sources with innovative digital tools. Thanks to the use of GIS, it has been possible to visually trace the evolution of the agricultural and forestry landscape of that geographical area, offering new insights for understanding and enhancing historical environmental heritage.

Indagine storico-letteraria e edizione in TEI Publisher

di Sara Guglielmi

This article presents an excerpt from my BA thesis in Digital Humanities, entitled Filippo Mazzei and the new model of democracy: historical-literary investigation and TEI Publisher Edition. A digital scholarly edition, developed thanks to the TEI Publisher software, has allowed me to delve into Old and New World relations from a so-far undervalued perspective. The focus is on investigating the influence of the Tuscan philosopher Filippo Mazzei on the contents of the American Declaration of Independence, thus rediscovering its connection with a Renaissance spirit. This contribution, defended in the academic year 2024/ 2025, was written under the supervision of Prof. Laura Galoppini (Thesis Advisor) and Prof. Angelo Mario Del Grosso (Co-Advisor).

This article investigates the epistemological significance of lived experience and pain in José de Espronceda’s El Diablo Mundo. Through the lens of a diversified framework encompassing various philosophical references —from Plato to Merleau-Ponty and contemporary embodied-cognition theories—it argues that pain, evolving from a physical to an existential level, constitutes here a privileged mode of access to knowledge. By analysing the personality of Adàn, we will see how his epistemic journey exemplifies the transition from romantic idealism to awareness of human finitude.

In 1571, the Portuguese Jesuit Gaspar Vilela wrote a letter from Goa in which he provided detailed observations of the artistic and religious landscape encountered during his mission in Japan. This article examines his descriptions of temples, gardens, and artworks that shaped the sacred environment of sixteenth-century Japan. Vilela’s letters offer a valuable testimony of the Western gaze on a deeply different culture, where art and spirituality are closely interwoven. The contribution reflects on the role of missionary sources in the study of intercultural art history and on the complex function of sacred images in the dialogue—an often ambivalent one—between Christianity and Buddhism.
